Meditation means simply being; stepping back; being aware of your thoughts; seeing them clearly; witnessing them appearing and going. Just being present, at peace and living each moment as it unfolds.
There is a lot of hype about meditation at the moment and rightly so! Extensive research is now showing us the amazing physical, therapeutic and mental health benefits that can be gained from this ancient practice.
We know that our brain is plastic, it is a muscle, and it can be changed! Like any muscle it is the cumulative effects of exercising that muscle over time that strengthens it. In particular, it is the prefrontal cortex that we are strengthening when meditating.
This part of the brain is responsible for:
- Goal directed behaviour
- Problem solving
- Making decisions
- Emotional balance
- Short term memory
- Self awareness and so many other wonderful attributes!
- Release stress and anxiety
- Improve sleep
- Improve digestion
- Activate disease fighting genes
- Increase immunity
- Reduce inflammation in the body
- Lower blood pressure
- Improve fertility
